(Now, someone please dig me out of the pile of books, papers and a laptop I'm buried under? My paper is only page and a half long now (+ five pages of stuff that will get in there, and growing), and it's already in four languages (Hebrew, English, German and Latin). Maybe 5, if I used Aramaic expressions. But it doesn't matter. I got it. Modernity is the root of all evil. And progress, if you're a white rich male. Now please let me goooooo!)
What's a reasonable portion of the course grade to be determined by the midterm and final for a University course? Does 20% sound good?
20% for each exam or 20% total? And what makes up the rest?
DebetEsse - if I understood the question right, here, as an undergrad, most of my grade - if not all of it - is based on the midterm and final. 80%, at least.

I use to have the final count more than the midterm, because I figured the students should have learned something in the meantime. (I think it was something like: final = 20%, midterm = 15%, various papers = 5% each [usually one a week--I taught Freshman comp], a couple of pop quizes = 5% each, final journal = 5%) No one failed for having a lousy day, but no one could coast to an A without doing most of the work.
We're doing projects, rather than exams, so it's not a single day. There seems to be a culture in the department of a high weight put on participation and working with mentor teachers in local schools.
