Nobody else is blinking at the weirdness of this? I'm thinking that must have felt quite odd for Gary Coleman. But maybe not.
This girl was much shorter than Gary Coleman. Like, came up barely to his waist. I think I remember some of the kids on the playground calling her a Muppet.
The internet knows all. The character's name was Kathy, the actress's name was Melanie Watson, she has osteogenesis imperfecta, and she's now known as Melanie Bernhardt and runs an organization that trains shelter dogs to be service dogs for people with disabilities.
Oh yeah, I remember her.

Why do I remember this? The show went off the air when I was four years old! I guess I watched reruns or something. I remember liking her because she would say snarky things back to the kids who were teasing her.
Hey, now that I see the face, I totally remember Kathy! I'm so glad she grew up cool!
Wow. The internet really does have everything. Hulu has 5-minute mini episodes made from a bunch of Diff'rent Strokes episodes, including the first one with Kathy. [link] Somehow, her comebacks don't seem as witty now as they did when I was six. "Don't EVER call me handicapped. I'm handi-capable, turkey!"

Vortex, I'd give a lot to be a fly on the wall at that meeting. He deserves every coat of paint you strip off him. And you know I love to hear you employ your vocabulary.
I think the main thought that occurred to me catching up was, "Stupid people are stupid." I've found no real reason to revise that opinion.

The first up close friend that the kids had that was in a wheelchair was Matt next door when he broke his neck. Being kids and knowing Matt they asked all kinds of questions. It was new to Matt too and he was incredibly patient with them.
