mac n' cheese (what? I so totally had that for breakfast this morning)
Just got off the phone with my apartment site manager and she said that where my lease is up next month, I don't have to immediately renew or vacate, which is a HUGE relief, as it gives me more time to find a new place. So I basically can live here lease-free until I find a place, then give my notice, and I still have sixty days to vacate. Is this too good to be true? Is there some hidden violation of my lease and therefore forfeit of my security deposit hidden in there?

I think it's pretty common for leases to automatically switch to month-to-month when the time is up, without re-signing something official to that effect. I think I only had to re-sign in NY when I lived in a rent-stabilized place.
Now I just need to survive my downstairs neighbor for a little bit longer. She had the volume way up on her TV last night, but I just turned up mine just enough so I could hear it fine and she eventually turned hers down (possibly after making herself deaf).
Oh, and double good news, then? Management made a "mistake" and didn't increase my rent. They've also offered to let me move into one of the vacant apartments across the street, but it's right next to the tracks and high-tension power lines. Also, no balcony or shade from the lovely maple tree. But my heart still breaks over the ginormous size of the kitchen and the brand new dishwasher in those other apartments.
*stares forlornly at five-by-eight-closet that is the kitchen*
Go to 2 minutes in on this for a lavender bathroom much like the one in the house I looked at: [link]
When Mister Kitty and Loki pass out, they have a tendency to stretch so they are touching, just like all three cats do to me when they curl up near me. It's really fucking cute. Right now, their forepaws are entertwined.
Don't make me post alone.
Hi!
When I lived in DC, I let me lease go month-to-month. It was awesome -- no increase, I could move when I wanted, etc.
Sorry, sara, your cats sleeping with entwined forepaws has made my heart burst with cuteness, and I will not be able t post.
We baking fresh, homemade chocolate chip cookies. They are done and warm and delicious!
I love it when they're still warm & gooey.
Code blue! Sophia!
The only time my rent didn't increase was when the mgmt was in chaos and I didn't have a lease for a couplethree years. Or longer. Then there was new mgmt, and the leasing office was torched (twice) and they got back on the ball, damnit, Which reminds me: as soon as I start making offers, I need to go negotiate with them. I've been here 12 years in good (if pushy to get critical infra fixed) standing, I should be able to negotiate the same rent should I not move before June 30, when my lease expires. Seriously, the rent is $300 more without a lease. INSANE.
