Our wings are not tired.

Beth, congrats on no carpet and Matt's job!!

I am on day 4 of a very bad cold/sore throat which sucks because I was supposed to check out a new cool spot in Oaktown with Consuela tonight. Instead, I haven't left the house since Friday night. Steve has been over a few times, to watch The Visitor on the Roku (loving the Roku, btw!) and bring me cough medicine. It's so much easier now that's he's 10 minutes away instead of 35+.

But, aside from missing hangout time with Consuela, being sick has been a largely enjoyable excuse to read and watch dvds, activities I rarely fit in my schedule. Sometimes it's nice to have an excuse to be immensely non-productive.

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

A man who owned a sports and fishing store in Old Town Alexandria wanted to expand. He bought a building, hired architects, came up with plans, and at each step, checked with the historical building commission, who kept saying everything looked good. It came time for final approval, and the historical building commission told him that he couldn't do it. They told him to submit new plans, but he said that he didn't have any more money for the architects. So, in retaliation, he rented the building to a sex shop. [link]

Indeed. I've been very unproductive this weekend, which is hard to justify. Whereas if I were sick, I wouldn't feel guilty about it.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

This is going to be an xpost (Natter and BS) because I honestly have no idea where this show belongs. I'd probably say it "transcends genre" if that phrase didn't make me grind my teeth - there's one blink-and-you'll-miss it brush with magical realism, but the bulk of the show is politics and family drama. On the other hand, it takes place in the fictional Kingdom of Gilboa, soooo....yeah. The show it most reminds me of is Rome.

Kings premieres on NBC in two weeks, and the promos have been at best confusing and at worst off-putting. But the show itself is AWESOME. I wish it were on cable where it would survive, because I have a feeling nobody will watch it due to NBC's total fucking up of the marketing effort and it will get canceled just as its getting interesting.

The worldbuilding in this show is astonishingly strong. The writing is solid, the characters well-drawn, and the acting is good across the board. And there's really nothing else like it on TV right now.

So far I've only seen the pilot - I have the next 2 eps as well, and if the show goes completely off the rails I'll take back everything I just posted. But I really hope it doesn't, because I want to know where this story goes.

The evil chicken is one of fandom_wank's favorite things.

Heh. The evil chicken isn't a joke? That's EVEN BETTER.

hip deep in pie

Jess, I've been planning on watching it solely for McShane.

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

Totally serious! Apparently there's also a line where the heroine "tried to think as the chicken bawk-bawk-bawked."

It's five thousand for kissing, ten thousand for snuggling... End of list.

It's actually too hot this way. bon bon, how did the bar exam go?

Eh. I whiffed on Thursday morning's essays, which is approximately 20% of the exam. It was exacerbated by the stomach cramps that ended up being a kidney and bladder infection. I am not confident that I passed. Which is not to say that I didn't pass -- I am hoping I scored well enough on the rest to make up for it, which will be difficult but not impossible. But that is one unfairly tough fucking exam.
