The ants are a part of what helps them bloom, though I disremember exactly what they do.

I hate to even start one of these discussions, but here goes:
How do you pronounce "peony"? I've only ever heard PEE-uh-nee, but I have one friend who insists that it's pee-OH-nee.
Of course, she also pronounces "corset" as cor-SETT, which is just the weirdest damn thing.
PEE-uh-nee
Though I say it with more of an "oh" than an "uh" in the middle.
What brenda said. And I had no idea about the ants.
Also, cor-SET is WRONG.
Though I say it with more of an "oh" than an "uh" in the middle.
The "uh" is very possibly my lazy pronunciation. Like "twenny" when saying "20."
Like "twenny" when saying "20."
"About tree fitty."
PEE-uh-nee
This. More 'uh' than 'oh' but then again, I live in the south, so that could have something to do with it. Frankly, I'm amazed it hasn't been shortened to one syllable.
"About tree fitty."
Ha! I'm not *that* bad.
But close.

I've barely even been to the south, and I barely say the 'uh' in between PEE and nee.
A friend of mine's very southern grandmother said it with such a soft NC accent so that it came out almost peh'nee Only a slight uh between the syllables. She had such a lovely voice and accent.
