Its specific location was intentionally vague but was certainly described to connote the region near Ossining and Crotonville. The nearest large city is White Plains, New York, some 8 to 12 miles southeast of Sleepyside.

White Plains is my hometown. I can remember Trixie going to WP to shop, and wondering why she would bother. Heh.
I don't know my upstate NY geography that well
White Plainsians would not consider their city upstate, since the emotional/fiscal ties are with NYC (not Albany). We're snobs that way. And probably a lot of other ways, too. One of my boyfriends from college used to call WP the land of 3-car garages.
I remember selling my Trixie Belden books at a yard sale. I wonder if the library here has them.
I have like two really strong memories of the books. One is the definition of the word "ennui", and the other is Trixie taping a sign to the foot of her bed to remind her to say "Rabbit, rabbit" on the first of the month.

It was some kind of superstition, where if it was the last thing you said when you went to bed on the 31st, and the first thing you said when you woke up on the 1st, your wish would come true.

When I was in grade school, I read that on the first of each month you're supposed to greet everyone by yelling, "White rabbit!"
As a joke, a friend of mine dropped off a rabbit in a box on our front lawn on the first of June. I didn't see the box until after the rabbit had escaped.
