Facebook interface defeats me. Well, confounds me. Are there Facebook filters? Can you filter posts for friends of your grandmother's? Or restrain your post content to grandmotherly-friendly things?

Yes, you can filter facebook. But it's not as easy to fine-grain as LJ; it's more like whole categories of things can be shown or not shown to groups you define.
I found a web site where you can look up the salary of any state employee in Georgia. So now I know what all my coworkers, and neighbors and acquaintances who work for the Uggaversity, make. Weird. The salary distribution is weird, too - almost everybody makes less than 40K or more than 80K.

Both, I think, but I've never bothered to really investigate the privacy settings.

That plane crash thing was so weird because right about at the same time it was happening we got word that a colleague in our Mexico City office just died from burns/injuries he received when a small plane crashed into our offices there in November. He spent about two weeks with my department around this time last year and was such a sweet kid.
