I suspect the Puritans married their cousins without qualms.

The D.C. Council voted today to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states, on the same day that Vermont became the fourth state to legalize same-sex unions.

So I should really check my squick-o-meter and check the science behind cousin marriage. Instead of just hating the acronym someone chose.

Not only has Vermont voted to allow same-sex marriage, but DC has voted to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states. From the Washington Post:

"The D.C. Council has voted to recognize gay marriages performed in other states on the same day that Vermont became the fourth state to legalize same-sex unions. Domestic partnerships already are legal in the nation's capital, and gay couples married in other states are recognized as domestic partners when they move the city. But today's legislation, billed as an important milestone in gay rights, explicitly recognizes them as married couples.

The initial vote was 12-0. The unanimous vote sets the stage for future debate on legalizing gay marriage in the District -- and a clash with Congress, which approves the city's laws under Home Rule. The council is expected to take a final vote on the legislation next month."

Now let's see if Congress votes this down.

It probably sounds very different depending on your relationship with your cousins. Mine, I almost never saw, so my first cousins are only slightly more "family"-feeling to me than total strangers. For lots of people, cousins can be almost as close as siblings. YFRMV.

I don't know why I was just reading something about this, but apparently having children with a first cousin only raises your risk for various genetic issues by like 1-2%. The problem is when those cousins start marrying.

I have lots of cousins marrying each other in my genealogy, including two sets of first cousins. Apparently, it's an American thing to be squicked by cousins marrying. I know I've read lots of British novels where cousins hit it off.
