tommy, I haven't heard Regina Spektor's new album, so I don't know which of her previous albums it most closely resembles, but my favorite of hers is Begin to Hope.
Buffista Music 4: Needs More Cowbell!
There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.
I like both the new album and Begin to Hope. Soviet Kitsch, though, has "Us" which is one of my favorites. And not only because of fandom.
I also learned about Regina Spektor from fandom. Her stuff is a bit hit-and-miss for me, but what I like I really like.
Holy Cow! Amanda Palmer has raised over a million dollars on her kickstarter! [link]
You donate $1,000 and you have to provide your own donuts ?? Come on now.
How come I haven't heard of Regina Spektor until I heard her interviewed on public radio?
I have no idea.
I was listening to Aretha Franklin's "Ain't No Way" this morning and what strikes me about that track is as excellent as Aretha's vocals are, the cherry on the sundae is the background vocals. Those background singers are doing exceptional work there - unless that's all producer stylings.
Any other songs you can think of where the background singers really make a song GREAT?

The cover of "Stairway to Heaven" performed by Barry Crocker and the Doug Anthony All Stars.
Oh! And on "Return of the Mack"! They're hilarious!
The background singer - the high descant one - on Ain't No Way is Whitney Houston's mother.
flea,
no WAY
Yep! Cissy Houston. [link]
So I just downloaded the I Feel So Far Away anthology album by Moe Tucker. Damn, her version of "Heroin" is good.
I bought Life In Exile After Abdication when it came out (around 1990?) and really liked it. I've also seen her live once or twice around then.
She's awesome.
(She's most famous for being the drummer of The Velvet Underground, in case you didn't know.)
