If nothing else, that's just going to turn off fans.
Well, that definitely seems like it happened.
Today, if you're going to indulge in direct communication with your fanbase, it has to be a two-way street or fans are going to get pissed.
That's totally fair. If you're going to get the ego-strokes of constant approval then you have to take the lumps of facing your mistakes.
She has always presented herself as SO OPEN about talking about issues and Wanting People To Understand!, so when she whined and sulked about people saying "Look, this is problematic", it was a shitty move.
Look, I am a fan of all sorts of problematic artists. (My tragic hair metal past, hello.) BUT - and this is the sticking point - those other problematic artists have never tried to represent themselves as progressive and open-to-in-depth-discussion artists. Motley Crue? No one batted an eye at their misogynistic assholery, because people knew what they were getting.
The AP backlash happened in part because of her presenting herself as open to discussion about Her Art, and then responding in a petulant manner when the discussion didn't go the way she wanted.
Again, I'm willing to give her a little more leeway than others because of the info I have from people who know her in her private life. But I also stand by my gut instinct that if she doesn't do some work on how she interacts with people, she will be this generation's version of Courtney Love, and not in a good way.

I get the distinction but I don't know if it's entirely fair that Crue get a bye as a function of their asshollery.
But basically it sounds like she did a big flounce-off.
But basically it sounds like she did a big flounce-off.
That's exactly what she did. After presenting herself as a creator who wouldn't do that sort of thing.

No one ever expected Crue to have any sort of dialog with their fans other than
"Did you bring drugs? Why aren't you naked yet?"
Whereas AP did foster expectations of open communication and dialog with her fans.
Social media has changed the game, no doubt. Just from my perspective, there aren't a lot of places where I post whatever comes into my head, AND I don't engage in arguments with people who bait me about GCS. (And there have been some who've tried.)
So would her behavior preclude you from getting her next album?
So would her behavior preclude you from getting her next album?
Well, I didn't buy the Evelyn Evelyn album, and I *was* going to. And I haven't purchased anything else she's released.
At this point, I'm waiting to see what she does, and my willingness to do so doesn't have a lot to do with her, but because she's friends with someone who I trust the opinions of. (Note, NOT because she's married to Neil. I adore Neil, but his weakness for the manic pixie/crazy artist girl type is not any sort of secret.)

And what is their opinion of her?
And what is their opinion of her?
That she's got a huge heart, will do whatever she can for friends, but she can be thoughtless and doesn't deal well with criticism.
