Jayne: Captain, can you stop her from bein' cheerful, please? Mal: I don't believe there is a power in the 'verse that can stop Kaylee from being cheerful. Sometimes you just wanna duct tape her mouth and dump her in the hold for a month.

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

Do you miss having Kimberly Rew around to beat at Whist?

See, I'd have asked if he ever sees him these days and does he give him shit about "Walking on Sunshine".

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

Andrew Sullivan has been discussing the Carpenters on his blog. In case you haven't seen it, check out this video of Sonic Youth's awesome cover of "Superstar": [link]

Also, this fun Shonen Knife cover of "Top of the World": [link]

Both these tracks are on the Carpenters tribute album If I Were a Carpenter

eta - from wikipedia:

Sonic Youth, who always found unlikely inspiration from the Carpenters,[3] on the 1994 tribute album If I Were a Carpenter, and later on the soundtrack for the 2007 film Juno. It was also featured in the film The Frighteners and in the theatrical trailer for High Tension. It also appeared in professional skateboarder Jerry Hsu's part in "Bag of Suck", the critically acclaimed skateboarding video by Enjoi which won Transworld awards for both best video and best video part (Hsu's). In an interview on NPR that aired in November 2009, Richard Carpenter expressed his distaste for this version.[4]

Huh. Well, the Sonic Youth version has a very eerie feel to it that I love, but I can see it not being Richard's cup of tea....

I have no problems expressing my deep and abiding love for the Carpenters. The further we get away from both the cheesy "goody-two-shoes" image they had in the Disco '70s and the tragedy of Karen's illness and death, the more the quality of their songs shines.

The original version of "Superstar" is still my favorite, but I love Bette Midler's take as well. She has a voice that comes the closest to matching Karen's in power and intensity.

What extras does that have?

Ann, that's a ferret.

Karen Carpenter is God.

I think that sums up my feelings.

Her range was the closest I ever came to matching a top-40 group's vocals when I was growing up, but I only dreamed of sounding even close to her in terms of quality and sheer talent. In elementary and middle school, I'd sing her songs into my hairbrush and imagine I was as good and pretty as her.
