Wow, Alex Chilton was memorialized in Congress by Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee.
Nice to see that I'm not the only one who skims.
Also, I started off my show with that!
There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.

ION, "Stagger Lee" by Nick Cave is awesome! What are some other good songs based on that story?
Oh, man, a couple of years ago, I found a blog post that listed dozens and dozens of versions of that. Lemme see if I can dig that up.
tommy, Wikipedia has a pretty good starting list here, with more info on the real Stagger Lee here.
The actual crime was in 1895, the first published song was in 1910. And approximately ninety billion versions since.
Pat Boone recorded "Stagger Lee"? Pat Boone????
(So says JZ's link. Which doesn't mention Tommy Roe's version -- not that Tommy Roe's version is all that memorable.)

*boggles*
Obviously not the same version as the Nick Cave one, though that would be hilarious.
Wrong 'Em Boyo! I'm going to download your show tonight, Jon. Looking forward to it!
Thanks for the link, JZ. In'eresting....
Just in case people don't know, the most awesome song on Nick Cave's Murder Ballads (the album that "Stagger Lee" is on) is "The Curse of Millhaven," a bloody and funny song about a serial killer who's a 14-year-old girl.
eta: Since the song is from the p.o.v. of the girl, originally Nick planned to have a woman sing it (Polly J Harvey sings on a lot of the tracks) but then Nick decided he loved the song so much he wanted to sing it himself.

I swear I've heard rumours that he's done versions of "O'Malley's Bar" that go on three or four times as long, and the original is not short.

Oh dear. That would be awesome, as that song is already awesome (but without the italics)....
Have you all seen the video of Nick singing "Staggerlee"? He's wearing a pink Take That t-shirt. (Take That being the UK equivalent of N'Sync.)
