I just took a quick look at the last scene and it does appear Sam's buttons (or snaps/studs) are in the shape of a cross. The diamond shaped button/snaps carry on across the two shirt pockets over his chest (two each). It is very cross-like. Now I'm curious about this meta.

ehab -- the point about the buttons is at the bottom; it's almost a throw-away bit of information. But yourlibrarian's meta is definitely an interesting read.

Upon re-watching, I'm struck by Ash's explanation of heaven. Ash said a few can share their slice of heaven -- special cases. Soul mates. How easy it was for Dean to find Sam, and how the two could share their heavens so easily (even if they were so disparate).

As magnificently painful as this episode was, I'm hanging onto this bit of information with what's left of my fingernails.

Re: ehab's observation about the buttons, it does seem an obvious attempt at imagery as there are two buttons on each breast pocket rather than what would typically be just one, which would not have been as apparent.

It's kind of weird that God doesn't consider the Apocalypse "His problem". His children (Michael and Lucifer) are the ones squabbling. Shouldn't he at least threaten to pull over the car?

I guess for meta it is easier to write God out rather than show him and for the writers, I'm sure it's easier for the show not to have God involved. Still. Weird.

God believes in free will, yes? And He keeps resurrecting Dean and Sam. So I guess he doesn't want to get directly involved more than he already has.

He did say "fire next time" and I guess we haven't reached that point yet...

I just rewatched the end of the episode, and the snaps on Sam's shirt definitely do form a cross pattern. Shiny silver studs on a dark shirt, no less, so it's obvious now that I'm looking.

Of course it's entirely possible that all of fandom is putting far more thought into the possible John/God ~ 3-times renouncing ~ heaven/bible metaphors than the writers are.

Also, watching Dean toss the amulet into the trash, I am struck with the following inevitable conviction: I am so, so beyond tired of the Woobification of The Dean. I no longer want to wrap him in blankets or feed him cookies and chicken soup. I know he's in pain, I know he bears a lot of guilt and responsibility on those broad shoulders. I know he feels crushed under it all and doesn't know where to turn next. But mostly I want him to start actually responding in a proactive way instead of lashing out. As it is, I think he just looks weak. And I know he's capable of so much more. I hope the writers are ready to begin an uptick soon, because I've reached my fill of watching the Winchesters being ground into the mud. Of course, all opinions are strictly my own, YangstMMV, and so on, and so on.

edit to clarify -- I don't think his being worn down by the immensity of the Apocalypse and not knowing how to handle it makes Dean seem weak -- what mere human would know how to deal with the Apocalypse, after all? No, what I was trying to get out, poorly, was that it's really time for him to stop obsessing over things like "Sam abandoned me to go to college!" and "pretend!mommy said mean things about me," because he had to know Zachariah was doing that precisely to make him angry. He needs to learn to focus and stop letting the petty emotional crap (particularly the stuff he should have dealt with long ago -- if he can keep track of every single time Sam went away, why can't he keep track of every single time Sam came back?) get in the way of what needs to be done. And he needs to hold onto the basic emotional bedrock that Sam loves him. Sam has always loved him. Regardless of whatever else has happened, Sam has always loved him.
