I'm wondering if it was from right after his wife died, but now he's cleaned up.
But that had to be before he had contact with the boys because that is what made him a hunter. That would have been so long ago that this particular sheriff couldn't have known him. I'm thinking that is outside perception, the way that the boys are murderous, psychopathic scam artists. Maybe?
