It hurts and it's telling that while Dean is so against Sam being obliterated by Anna in order to stop Lucifer, he's in favor of Mary leaving John so that neither he nor Sam would ever be born at all. It wouldn't be acceptable for Sam to get ganked, but it's okay for both of them to be offed.
