That fic does look interesting, ita! A rock band. Dean would be so happy. Think of the groupies. And he could pie and motor oil in every rider.
I just read it and I really liked it! The author worked in everything so well. I could see it as a TV show, too, not that there are ever TV shows about rock stars.

The only problem I have with it is that John's death is just a stupid meaningless overdose with nothing of the selfless canon a part of it.
I swear, that's all John has been recently. It's like fandom just decided to take a communal dump on his head.
Fandom always dumps on John, and I didn't love that about the story either, but in this AU, what's he going to do in terms of self-sacrifice? Take a bullet for Dean? I can't think of any way to express that part of the mythology without serious melodrama.
I could see them being held up by a mugger, and loser addict John shoving Dean to the side and attacking the mugger who was about to shoot Dean, and then the mugger runs off into the night, leaving Dean alive and John DED.
There are ways. And given the removed narration of this particular fic, the ways don't have to be detailed or even clear (and therefore make don't have to make sense under a close inspection that wouldn't be possible due to the vaguery).
Eh. Since they're adults, people might expect Dean to protect his dad. Either way, not the sort of thing that happens in real life very often.
