Because books.

I didn't know they had one of those. But all I know about Scientology pretty much = Tom Cruise and John Travolta, so.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

He's the only deity anyone ever mentions, which means he's used interchangeably in snark for bad guy or worshipped guy. I have to admit, I have no idea if they do have a benevolent deity, because that would be paying more attention than they're worth, IMNSH(at all)O.

I'm just tickled that Jared was snarking on it.

Calli: My people have a saying. A man who trusts can never be betrayed, only mistaken.Avon: Life expectancy among your people must be extremely short.

For more detail than you want David Ehrenstein's fablog has a good outline of the mythology (including the parts Scientology tried to copyright so they could sell access at a high price) somewhere. On the dying computer (been dying for more than a year now) so not going to overcome various computer quirks to find the link.

Oh, if only I didn't find Ehrenstein insufferable.

I'm sure I've seen the publicly available details from another source, as reading anything by DE makes my blood pressure climb like one of those cartoon thermometers.

Because books.

Tim Minear wrote this week's episode of American Horror Story, and there's a side plot including the story of the Roanoke colony, and using the word "Croatoan" as spell to banish ghosts !

I'm taking it as a shout out to SPN. ::nods::

SPN needs to do a cult takedown episode. Like, one that parallels Scientology, in which it's a recently invented religion, but the L Ron analogue has made a pact with some evil, or is using bad magic to actually make it look real. So they have to battle mentally enslaved people as well as the supernatural.

Someone! Make it happen!
