I was just about to mention that one. They used to recommend mayonnaise with cigar ash as a mild abrasive. (Just about any kind of oil will work if the ring is only in the finish, but where's the fun in that? Also, the mayo doesn't run.)

I walked into an emergency vet's today with both a balloon snake (that I had convinced one of the party store guys to make for me) and a Miss Kitty Balloon, and they let me back into the treatment room.
That was fun, and now I have a new emergency vet.
