I watched the CW promo clip for this week, since I won't be seeing the ep until Monday.

I know it would dispel dramatic tension and all, but is there any non-meta reason Castiel can't just pop up next to Sam and, oh, I don't know, read his mind to find out what's going on with him? It might not do much good if it's just trauma and PTSD making him act weird, but you'd think Cas could at least rule out the possibility of any supernatural influence compromising him .

I thought mind-reading was only fanon (and I hate it there. It's cheating). If anything, I'd say Cas can maybe sense the state of Dean's soul, specifically, or surface emotions and broad strokes.
