And Kaylee, what the hell's goin' on in the engine room? Were there monkeys? Some terrifying space monkeys maybe got loose?

"I make mistakes, but I am on the side of Good," the Golux said, "by accident and happenchance.” – The 13 Clocks, James Thurber

From the zap2it article that sumi linked:

Zap2it was on the scene with series stars Padalecki and Ackles at Creation Entertainment's Salute to "Supernatural" in Vancouver when Ackles discussed Dean's involvement in the show's overarching storyline. If the 20-second promo is anything to go by, Dean will be a major catalyst for Season 6's arc.

"I was happy that Dean was part of the mythology finally," he says of Season 5, when Dean grappled with the temptation to host the archangel Michael. "For four seasons he was just the older brother trying to keep the younger brother from going darkside. "Now I finally had purpose."

That said, Ackles is glad that he never actually had to play Michael. "Phew. Dodged that bullet," he says.

Really? Just the older brother trying to keep Sam from going over the edge? 'Cause that's not how I ever saw him, and I never thought that's how he was written. As far as I can tell, Show is written from Dean's POV which by definition makes his character centrally important. Dean has always been the heart, in every sense of the word, of the operation. And Dean has consistently been a Big Damn Hero when it comes to Saving People and Hunting Things. I admit that I got tired of the excessive use of the single crystalline tear of manly emo pain, but JA was give the opportunity to showcase some really exceptional acting in the last few seasons. I'm surprised that he would view Dean as "just the older brother."

I'm also amused that JA apparently didn't want to play Michael, considering how many fan rants I've read from people who are convinced that he was robbed of his opportunity -- that Dean was built up all season long to have this big role in the Apocalypse only to have it pulled away from him at the end and given to Sam.

I guess he wanted powers, but that balances out that he doesn't want to use them. Just wanted a bit of destiny hanging over his head, I guess. Something to fight against that wasn't Sam, maybe. Otherwise he spends the season trying to talk Sam down, whereas it comes down in the end to Sam talking Dean down, and then Dean showing up and grounding Sam,

None of this is directed at you Morgana, I'm just so shocked that I can still be shocked by fans. That there are fans mad about the role that Dean did or didn't have-- @@

I don't know how they could have made either of the actors do more. Seriously. Both boys were necessary. Both boys had HUGE roles. I'm thinking they brought "Adam" in because it physically wasn't possible for JA or JP to do anymore than they were already doing. JP did an amazing job channeling Lucifer, but I'm not going to complain about either actor giving more to the show. They have given enough. Comedy, tragedy, romance, action--the boys have done it all. They've done it really well too.

Fire! Brimstone! Epic battle! That's how 5.22 should have gone out. A bigger battle than...than...than all the previous season enders. Which have ended with ... a non-lethal bullet wound and car crash, two gun deaths, a mauling, a stabbing, and now a fistfight, a neckbreak and a Casplosion.

Casplosion.

I love this word.

Cass, If you get really mad, can we say you are having a Casplosion?

I think the rabid fangirls were arguing that the season seemed to imply that Dean would save the world by housing Michael and defeating Lucifer. He would be the savior that would wave the magic sword and wear the special cloak or whatever, and all lesser beings would be in awe... at any rate, Dean's role would be that of savior of all mankind. And in the end that was given to Adam, someone we had only seen in two episodes, and actually Sam was given the chance to take down Lucifer instead. Dean just sat off to the side after getting beaten to a bloody pulp.

I'm not saying that's my perspective, I'm saying that's what the rabid Dean!girls have been frothing about.

To the rabid Dean!Girls:

The role of the saviour of all mankind wasn't given to Adam--the role of dupe of the petulant angels was what he got instead. Dean turned that down, and Sam narrowly avoided dark!dupe because Dean stayed by his side. Good luck saving the world with just one of them.

Cas: "I just want you to understand -- The only thing that you're gonna see out there Is michael killing your brother."

Dean: "Well, then I ain't gonna let him die alone."

I haven't been able to bring myself to rewatch the finale. I know I should in preparation for the new season, but... I just haven't been able to muster up the wherewithal to put myself through the wringer.
