surely there are other paths to popularity that don't involve sports or GPA?
My senior class president was a fairly smart guy (but not academically brilliant) who was in choir and/or marching band and not a jock. He wasn't clique-ish at all—rather, a nice guy guy who got along with just about everyone. Which probably had a lot to do with why he was the most popular person in school, actually.

"If You Ever Get Close to a Human" had an interesting premise, until I realized it meant creeper Sam and creeper Cas (not horrifically, just awkwardly and stupidly). Still, the take on Sam was unique -for what I've read of post-Swan Song speculative fics. Mostly awkward and a little read-from-the-hall, but not downright awful. But I also cringe at any fic that has awkward!Cas trying to learn how to be human.
