I haven't read the list, but I know seeing John mentioned as part of it surprised me.
I think in terms of love alone, he was a good father. He did love the boys, fiercely, but his love for them was always colored by his need to train them to protect themselves and to take up this mantle of vengeance and do-gooding. Which ... is not so good. Especially not when it actually involves putting them in danger, and a level of benign neglect that child services is going to raise an eyebrow at.
And yet, I know what drove him. So I love him ... but I don't know if I'd call him a *good* dad.
little Captain Jack.
Oddly, I have seen all of Torchwood.
Just not Dr Who.
Just not Dr Who.
Jack's very different in Doctor Who. Still in character, but you can tell his crush is strong, because he presents a much subbier face. It's worth a try, if you have viewing time.
It's on my netflix queue, but I never seem to make it there.
I will some day!
You could skip right to "The Empty Child" (and part two, "The Doctor Dances")- it's a good stand-alone two-parter and the introduction to Captain Jack.
I think I am too much of a completist for that, but I will bear it in mind!
WALTER! Oh, my heart. Crazy, brilliant Walter. And his pudding pops. And his cow. And his LSD.
I really need to get around to watching Fringe. I've heard so much about Walter from my friends. Usually followed by,
"He kinda reminds me of your dad".
Walter is awesomecakes, Peter is gorgeous and brooding and angsty, and Olivia kicks ass. WATCH. IT. Oh, and Broyles also rules. SO much love for him, the taciturn softie.
OMG, I'm becoming the world's biggest John apologist.
Yikes.
Hey, shouldn't he get points for raising a Dean that could raise Sam so well? Sure, Dean came out very broken, but I think events broke Sam more than parenting (or lack thereof) broken Sam.
