I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.

I need to think about a couple of these but that last quote match-up reminded me of something I had wanted to ask. I've seen a number of people who thought that when Dean said "Then I ain't going to let him die alone", he meant that he would make it so he died with Sam. I thought, given the conversation he and Sam had in the car, that he meant he wanted to be with Sam when Sam died. How did you interpret that line - a desire to be with Sam or die with Sam?

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

lcat, I think it was both. He was certainly up for dying in the encounter (but not allowed to off himself, according to the promise Sam extracted), so while I don't think he was out and out trying to off himself, he was typical quasi-suicidal Dean.

Almost Croatoan!Dean, but not quite.

Bob's learned to live with tragedy, but he knows that this tragedy is one that won't ever leave him or get better.

Season 5, Round 1, Bracket #1/4

Castiel: I got your message. It was long, your message. I find the sound of your voice grating. -- Cas confused, drunk or baffled by humanity is second only to BAMF Castiel. And is even more quotable.

Castiel's voicemail: You have reached the voice mail of [Castiel: I don’t understand. Why do you want me to say my name?] -- Hands up if you kinda wanted to make this your message...

Crowley: Where's your moose? -- I'm going to let this one go next time. But it makes me think of a cute stuffed moose.

Dean: Pudding!!! -- thwapthwapthwap

Season 5, Round 1, Bracket #2/4

Chuck: Three days later another car rolled off that same line. No one gave two craps about her, but they should’ve. Because this 1967 Chevrolet Impala would turn out to be the most important car... no, the most important object in pretty much the whole universe. -- Apparently I am much more in favor of yellow crayons when they are smoking awesome cars.

Dean: I don't have any elephant books. -- I loved the Barbar books.

Dean: Sammy? Sammy? It's okay, I'm here. I'm not going to leave you. -- Oh, Dean.

Castiel: (Into cell phone) This isn't funny Dean, the voice says I'm almost out of minutes! -- OMG, you are evil, ita. Evil and awful and mean and NOT MY FRIEND. I think "problem --> must be night Show airs" is a fantastically amusing thing but the voice said Castiel was almost out of minutes!

Season 5, Round 1, Bracket #3/4

Jo: No. Sweetheart, if this is our last night on earth, then I'm going to spend it with a little thing I call self-respect.
Dean: If you're into that kinda thing. -- Eh. But I am superglad that they didn't have these two hook up.

Castiel: I found a liquor store.
Sam: And?
Castiel: And I drank it! -- Seriously, I kinda am creeped out by how much I less than three Cas.

Bobby: (holds up shotgun toward Crowley) Now get the hell off my property before I blast you so full of rock-salt that you start crapping margaritas! -- Oh, how far we've come since we first realized that there were demons and angels.

Dean: Cas, not for nothing, but the last person who looked at me like that...I got laid. -- I don't even ship them and this? Kinda made me see it.

Season 5, Round 1, Bracket #4/4

Castiel: No, he's not on any flatbread. -- I'm sorry. The Kim Manners shoutout makes me cry but narratively it wasn't as strong for me.

ZACHARIAH: You know Sam and Dean Winchester are psychotically, irrationally, erotically codependent on each other, right? -- Creepy angel, kinda awesome creepy line.

Dean: You see, Brady, we're the ones you should be afraid of. -- This is why I love Team Free Will. This.

Dean: Then I ain't going to let him die alone. -- ::sniff::

You should know I'm a big deal in the Resistance.

S5, R1, B1

  • Castiel: I got your message. It was long, your message. I find the sound of your voice grating. : I'm voting for Castiel a lot but I love him so much this season.

  • Castiel's voicemail: You have reached the voice mail of [Castiel: I don’t understand. Why do you want me to say my name?]: Because Cas's misuse of technology never fails to amuse.

  • Chuck: Uh no, there's really no such thing as a Croatoan virus for... down there, um... you really should see a doctor. : I can't place the other quote.

  • Dean: Pudding!!! : Instant classic

S5, R1, B2

  • Chuck: Three days later another car rolled off that same line. No one gave two craps about her, but they should’ve. Because this 1967 Chevrolet Impala would turn out to be the most important car... no, the most important object in pretty much the whole universe. : this moment gave me goosebumps.

  • Dean: Word to the wise--don’t piss off the nerd angels. :I love both these quotes but I already voted for a Dean quote from the same episode

  • Dean: Sammy? Sammy? It's okay, I'm here. I'm not going to leave you. : yellow crayon!

  • Castiel: (Into cell phone) This isn't funny Dean, the voice says I'm almost out of minutes! : exasperated Cas is also my favorite

S5, R1, B3

  • Jo: No. Sweetheart, if this is our last night on earth, then I'm going to spend it with a little thing I call self-respect.
Dean: If you're into that kinda thing. :I wanted to vote for family but I couldn't vote against Jo (and she's family too!)

  • Castiel: I found a liquor store.
Sam: And? Castiel: And I drank it! : a tough choice but this one barely edged out the other.

  • Dean: No, I am not a fan. Okay? Not fans! In fact, I think that the Dean and Sam story sucks! It is not fun, it’s not entertaining, it’s a river of crap that would send most people howling to the nuthouse! So you listen to me. Their pain is not for your amusement! I mean, you think they enjoy being treated like circus freaks?
Demian: I'm not sure you get what the story's about. Dean: That so? Demian: In real life, he sells stereo equipment. I fix copiers. Our lives suck. But Sam and Dean. To wake up every morning and save the world. To have a brother who would die for you. Well, who wouldn't want that? : I do love the Bobby quote but I love better the was Dean says "not fans!"

  • Dean: This is a fight? Are we in a fight?
Castiel: This is... their handshake. Dean: I don't like it! Castiel: No one likes it. : the whole exchange is one of my favorite moments in the entire series.

S5, R1, B4

  • Ellen: I said go. And Dean? Kick it in the ass. Don't miss. : it's the meta. & Ellen of course

  • Castiel: Hey assbutt! : such the perfectly wrong "last" words.

  • Dean: All those angels, all those demons, all those sons of bitches, they just don't get it, do they Sammy?
Sam: No they don't, Dean. Dean: You see, Brady, we're the ones you should be afraid of. : beautifully chilling

  • Dean: Then I ain't going to let him die alone. : I already voted for the other bookend of this quote from the same episode but I can't quite place the competing quote from this bracket.

"What would it take to get your daughter to stop tweeting about this?"

How did you interpret that line - a desire to be with Sam or die with Sam?

Thinking about this got me crying (which great, I'm supposed to be getting ready for a party) because I go back to the earnestness and protectiveness of Castiel "I just want you to understand -- The only thing that you're gonna see out there Is michael killing your brother." But Dean has no choice. "Then I ain't going to let him die alone."

I agree with ita. Both ways. I never thought Dean was going there with the purpose to die, but if it happened while he was protecting his brother then Dean was fine with that. At the time, I mostly felt Dean was saying that he was going there to symbolically hold Sam's hand. So that even if he couldn't physically get to Sam, Sam could see that he was there and know Dean was with him to the end.

Oh shit, that hurts.

Hands up if you kinda wanted to make this your message...

::slowly raises her hand::

I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.

I'm good with "I'll take the risk" Dean but for some reason it bugs me that people see him reverting to "I can't live without him" Dean when I think it is pretty clear that he had moved beyond that. My Season 5 Dean has too much respect for Sam to be deliberately suicidal.

Amy - Jun 12, 2010 2:19:01 pm PDT #10730 of 30002
Because books.

Yes, this.

My Season 5 Dean has too much respect for Sam to be deliberately suicidal.

I think there's a difference between "deliberately suicidal" and welcoming death, though. And I think even the Dean we saw at Lisa's table might welcome death. He's been saying it for a long time, and I think it's even truer now -- he's tired. And he has every reason to be now, too, especially grieving.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I still see S5 Dean as seeing little worth to living without Sam. I don't think he'd eat his gun just because little bro was gone, but dying beside him as part of the whole shenanigans? Without hesitation.

I think we saw that in Dark Side Of The Moon.

Laga - Jun 12, 2010 2:27:55 pm PDT #10732 of 30002
You should know I'm a big deal in the Resistance.

I don't think Dean was thinking about himself at all when he said he wouldn't let Sam die alone.

Because books.

Oh, me too. I don't think I made that clear. I just think when he went to that confrontation he wasn't "deliberately suicidal," and I don't think he will be now, either, because he promised Sam.

I'm not sure Dean has any idea what's worth living for without Sam at this point.
