Also. I'm sitting here on the quiet car of the train, getting unreasoably annoyed at people making the slightest noise.

And then I remember how lucky I am that I have a brother, and that he is alive and not maimed or anything like that.

Because yesterday he spent twelve hours on a plane. With a cat. Who meowed. Every five seconds. For twelve hours.

So holiday wishes go out to all the passengers of flight whatever from Moscow to Atlanta. You are better people than I, no question.

(Seriously, y'all, they were tying to make the cat drink wine in the (futile) hope of getting him to shut up shut up shut the fuck up already. My only question was how many times did they get punched in the head, which, none. So I guees it was all aliens on that flight or something?)

So anyway there's your holiday miracle if you were on the lookout for one.

Um, hi? Remember me?

I have to finish grading these exams. They're due tomorrow, which is actually already here, looking at the time. I teach on 8am, so the exams are due back in 6 hours.

I had guests here for lighting Hanukkah candles until half an hour ago (some people don't have to work tomorrow!), and therefore had the perfect excuse not to grade. Now I'm all out of excuses.

So of course I have to log on and ask ho everybody is doing and wish you all a good time whether you have any holiday to celebrate soon or not (I love it so much when Hanukkah and Christmas coincide. It's like there's an "increase the light quota in the world" order out or something).

So, to sum up (yet not in short, because who am I trying to kid), hi.

Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To get to the Dark Side!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Thanks Kat for the NORAD link, I meant to look it up.

There's a past religious discussion regarding Hanukkah, about the number of candles to light on each day of the holiday. One opinion says that the first day should have 8 candles, the second day 7 candles and so forth, until just the one. The other opinion switches the order, and starts with one candle, adding one each day to get to the needed 8. This opinion won, and one of the strongest reasons for it was the one of "adding light rather than subtracting it". I love that.

beth, is the Newton in your tag the one with the apple falling on its head and the standing on the shoulders of giants and the thee laws of motion?

For posterity:

Yay Newton!--The Librarian

I'm asking because this "Yay Newton!" line is pretty much the subject we're just finishing at the class I'm teaching, and my students are pretty certain that I'm probably a groupie of his or something. Like I'd stand outside of ivy-covered walls of academia to ask for his signature or swoon that he shook my hand and I'd never wash it again.

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

Hee!

I'm vegging out now and watching TV. Just watched Year Without Santa Claus, and at 8, going to watch It's A Wonderful Life.

Um, hi? Remember me?

Nilly! I swear I was just thinking of you, and how long it had been since I'd seen you around here, as I iced the carrot cake for dessert tomorrow. I hope you are well. I hope you enjoy the growing light over Hanukkah. It's also apt this time of year, because the days are just starting to get longer, at least in this hemisphere.
