We registered the punchcard way in HIGH SCHOOL. Each department had a table in the cafeteria and the students in the center stressing to reconfigure their classes. I remember we got sent up in groups of 20, randomly chosen, so there were also all the other kids from your grade outside, waiting for their name to be called.

Registration at UOP in the last of the 70s, earliest of the 80s featured a WalMart style stampede in a room set up with card tables and petrified TAs. Once I got wise, I scoped out the profs I wanted, in the time slots I wanted and hit them up for a slot before the big day. That usually worked, but when it didn't it sucked. The whole, shuffle around campus begging thing mentioned above.

When I wen to American (early 90s), my bastard step-child program was even less efficient.

At Loyola (early zeros), it was easier and a bit less stressful because of the limited course offerings and low student ratio. But since I was driving an hour to get there, the scheduling was sometimes a bitch with the long breaks between classes and nowhere to do.

I am swooning with envy. I fell in love with her voice decades ago through my mom's ancient but beloved Belafonte at Carnegie Hall LP, and searched local used record stores for years after chasing down her own LPs. I haven't listened to any of them in years now, but just thinking about her voice gives me goosebumps.

Oh yes, and in person, in a great hall in Baltimore, her voice was awe inspiring. Truly an thing of beauty. And utterly effortless. And when she walked down a hall, she swept down the hall. People just naturally made way.
