When Joe and I first heard that Drew and Kristin were, you know…”together”…there was some, it is shameful to admit, thoughts of…”Really?”
It’s not that we ever, EVER thought “This will never work,” but, at first glance…really?
It’s just that…well, what could they have in common? They met on the Internet, for Pete’s sake! Aside from the fact that neither of them is what you’d call “tall” and a mutual love of “Buffy”…what?
So, as happy as we were, there was a kind of “WTF?” moment.
But, as we watched them, it made more sense. However…how to describe it in a speech?
Well…it’s like the “Mona Lisa.” No, seriously, stay with me, it’ll all make sense. The “Mona Lisa” is, inarguably, a classic that has stood for centuries as one of the finest works of art yet produced by the hand of humankind. But…at first glance, the “Mona Lisa”, well…why is it a classic? I mean, the technique is good, I guess, but your average layman wouldn’t really notice that, right? Your average layman is all “I don’t know art, but I know what I like.” And, really, we don’t want to get into what Drew and Kristin like. Not in mixed company, anyway.
At first glance the “Mona Lisa”…well…she’s not that pretty. She’s not ugly, don’t get me wrong, but…she’s no Salma Hayek, youknowwhudI’msayin?
But as you look more…as you see more…you realize…she is beautiful, in all the important ways. The ways that really matter.
She’s enigmatic. Elegant. Confident. Poised. She works. You can’t say how, it’s impossible to articulate…but she works. She is a masterpiece.
And that’s Drew and Kristin. They are, in their way, enigmatic; elegant; confident; poised…but, more importantly, they work.
Like La Gioconda, Drew and Kristin work. They “click.” They “gel.” They whatever verb you choose to describe it, they work in a way that cannot be described or articulated. You can only point and say “It’s…that…you know?”
It is a classic. It is beautiful. And, like Da Vinci’s best-known work…it shall withstand the centuries as an example of one of the finest works of humankind.
Let us all hope, however, that pictures of it don’t end up hanging in the Louvre.
