I saw a 527 pro-Obama ad yesterday that used Paul Simon's "American Tune," which matched perfectly with what I was thinking when I heard that very same song just last week. The lyrics seem to speak to today's challenges, and the ad picked images to go with both the hardships and the hope ("I don't know a dream that's not been shattered / Or driven to its knees" with pictures of foreclosed houses and food pantries).

But an amazing thing happened. In the Iowa caucuses, white Americans voted for the black guy. That's the moment Obama was referring to when he said his faith in the American people was vindicated. For me, it was the moment when the utterly impossible became merely unlikely. That's a fundamental change, and it launched a sequence of events over the subsequent months that made me realize that some things I "knew" about America were apparently wrong.

The magical unicorn convo is making me laugh. My daughter's class at school voted to call themselves the Magical Unicorns. Which, now that I think about it, means that perhaps one of them does have a magical unicorn army supporting them. It's just a very small one.
