"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Neal Hefti, who wrote the theme songs for The Odd Couple and the 60s Batman series, has died. The world feels a little less infectiously bouncy, somehow.

He has a track on the Batman soundtrack I always loved, "My Fine Feathered Finks."

Another recent death of note is William Claxton. You may not know his name but you know his work.

The greatest jazz photographer.

He was married to sixties fashion icon Peggy Moffitt.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

Some guy's attempt to sue God has failed.

I reported before that Nebraska state senator Ernie Chambers was suing god for committing evil and making terroristic threats. I'm sorry to say now that God beat the rap, and now has something in common with O.J. Simpson. Of course, he got off on a technicality.

"Given that this court finds that there can never be service effectuated on the named defendant this action will be dismissed with prejudice," Judge Polk wrote in his ruling.

I'm sure he's relieved — the devil has all the good lawyers locked up

Ideas for things to do with green tomatoes besides fry 'em? Or, recipes for fried green tomatoes?

Fandom means never having to say "But where would I wear that?"

Timelies all!

Have not watched any of the debates. Then again, I know who I'm voting for.

My University is desperately searching for someone like Nilly. We’re not the only ones. Nilly's area of research is the hottest thing in interdisciplinary science right now and everyone is competeting for new faculty who know how to do it. Our ad:

The Complex Systems group currently has 10 faculty members with strong ties to other units at in the University that pursue research in the field of Complex Systems, including Cognitive Science, Psychology, Physics, the Biocomplexity Institute, and the School of Library and Information Science.

The research sub-areas in the group include complex networks, artificial life and robotics, computational intelligence, bio-inspired computing, computational biology and epidemiology, large scale data modeling and simulation, and Web applications. We are particularly interested in strengthening our emphasis on modeling the dynamics of complex information networks, social networks and media, and their broad societal implications.

Ideas for things to do with green tomatoes besides fry 'em?

I read somewhere (one of the Little House on the Prairie books, maybe) that you could use them to make something like an apple pie. I've never tried it, myself, but Cooks.com has some recipes.

mr. flea does mathematical/computer modeling of complex systems, but he works with built (water distribution network) and natural environments. Clearly environmental systems modeling is not as cool! Though I think the math and programming is a lot alike.

One of my foodie/canning-crazy friends has been making green tomato & apple chutney. She also is experimenting with green tomato & apple pie.

Now let us crush something soft and watch it fountain blood. That is a girlish thing to want to do, yes?

Rick's making me think PhD thoughts. Bad Rick!
