I have posited that the G.O.P. has persuaded oil companies to start lowering prices before the election so the Republicans can point at them and go "Look! See?! It's working! We lowered gas prices! Vote Us!"

Nah, the economic news has got oil speculators thinking demand will drop steeply. I have confidence that OPEC at some point will cut production to stop the free fall.

eta: But yeah, Republicans should watch it and see what McCain and Palin are doing to their party. And everybody else should watch to see what McCain and Palin are doing to their country.

(OK, I know some Republicans are concerned about that is being done to their country as well as their party.)
