Calli, I think my Mom's situation is the result of location purely. She had been a low-paid secretary or SAHM for most of her life, widowed in 1970 and raising her kids on Soc. Security for the next ten, with the only big advantage that the mortgage got paid off with my father's life insurance money. Northern NJ house prices zooming up ridiculously (about 15 miles from NYC) is probably the biggest factor in her financial situation.

t edit But it didn't actually *close* above 10,000 until March 30, 1999. It just broke it on March 16 and then dipped back down.

Yeah, I still have my 401k investing in stock, but I moved a lot of the existing money into bonds a year ago. I wonder if the time has come to think about moving some of that back into stock.

The Dow first broke 10,000 in 1999. It reached a peak of 12,500 early in 2000. It went back down as low as 7,500 during the dot-com bust. It broke 10,000 again in 2004 and stayed there (until now).
