[NAFDA] Spike-centric discussion. Lusty, lewd (only occasionally crude), risqué (and frisqué), bawdy (Oh, lawdy!), flirty ('cuz we're purty), raunchy talk inside. Caveat lector.

The Mighty Fightin' Whatnots will need a really excellent mascot.

I'm interested in the whole "lady" discussion. Growing up in a determinedly southern family, where being ladylike was a major goal, I came to despise the whole mystique. I gave up the "lady" thing and tried to just be human.

However, I've noticed that in the past several years, the words "male" and "female" have, to a large extent, replaced "man" and "woman". And I really hate it - unless you're doing a form for health or police purposes, male and female imply animals to me.

After you see so many AFLAC commercials, any excuse for flaming duck is a good one.

Fandom's Bitch that I am, I was pondering what Captain/Doctor Carter would think of the use of the word lady. If a man can be an officer and a gentleman, why then, she shouldn't object to being referred to as a lady. But then... the phrase "an officer and a lady" conjures up a totally different mental image, doesn't it?

No, I don't think I will - me, quoting Captain Steve Rogers, to all of 2020

(And MM - she asked for a flaming COW, not a duck.)

And a flaming cow she got.

The flaming duck was a gift-with-purchase. Like a tote bag, but quackier and on fire.

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe

Lastly, something that puzzles me in this conversation. When I think of powerhouse female collegiate basketball, I think of the "Lady Vol's" from Tennessee.

But that's the name that the college itself gave to the team. The universities who haven't slapped diminutives onto their women's sports teams tend to refer to them as (for instance) U.C. Bearcats Women's Basketball.

Which is better, I suppose, than my friend's co-ed high school that celebrated -- and I'm not making this up -- Men's Sports Week and Girls' Sports Day. Nice. Like they were forced to acknowledge that the female critters actually could bounce a ball, so they threw them the smallest bone possible.

One of the many reasons I loved going to an all-girls' school.

I went to a women's college; we frequently had to correct those who called it a "girls' school". It was nice having the entire student government young women, everything was geared to women. (And the infirmary had stirrups permanently attached to the examining tables. THAT will freak out a guy!)
