I've found that the key is to make sure the plastic wrap on top of the bowl is super duper tight. When it's not tight, the flies don't/won't go in through the holes.

Emily, (re: Semitic languages): it's kindda the same in Hebrew, with the fem./mascu.. I remember the part about the "two" form in Arabic. And the thing that made my life so much easier, of course, was that every adj. that's referring to a group of objects, as long as they're not people, will be in the singular fem. form.
I kicked major ass analyzing verbs in Arabic (classify them into root/stem, fem./mascu., singular/plural, tense and conjugation(?). We did it almost every other class in high school, and I enjoyed it very much). I really hope I'll be able to improve it in university.
