I knew Chile and her sibs since they were only days old. They were born next door to a friend of mine in Koreatown, and I visited all of the time. Shiba's mom's name was "Pancho" and a name and an old rope were literally the only thing her owners ever gave her. Pancho was emaciated when she got knocked-up, and her owners couldn't care less about her pregancy or the puppies. My friend went over every morning and evening, into their yard (where Pancho was on a 6-foot leash tied to the fence) and fed the puppies cottage cheese and hotdogs. When they were old enough to start exploring, the neighbors refused to pay attention to things like closing their gate, so one of the pups got hit by a car. And another couple got given away at 5 weeks! 5 weeks! So I drove down to LA, strode next door, told them I was taking the remaining three pups and asked if I could take Pancho too. They wouldn't give me Pancho, but shrugged at the puppies.
So I gave them all a bath, put them in a cardboard box and spent 15 hours driving up 101. I had to stop every half and hour for them to eliminate and drink and eat.
I had them for the summer, through all of their shots, obedience training, etc. I found Chile's brothers good homes and kept her. It was so much work, having those puppies, but I don't regret a single second. I had a 10-year old pound dog (Sheperd mix) at the time, and she (Sage) died last year. I thought I'd get another dog again right away, but I am really enjoying just having Chile Pepper right now.

javachik, that's such a lovely story (well, your part of it is, the beginning is quite sad).
Good on you, javachik. So mom was definitely a shiba? In Koreatown, I'm not surprised that she got knocked up by a jindo or jindo-mix.
You'd all do the same if you saw this little guy, I know it.
Lori, Pancho looked JUST like this. She coulda been a Jindo or a Shibu, right?
And Koreatown makes me think Jindo is more likely. And there were a lot of dogs roaming around who resembled both breeds as well. And one of them was daddy.
Wow. That was a lot of Natter to catch up on.
Ha! That Kyoto link looks more like a Jindo than Shiba. Shibas usually have tighter tails.
But really, they are mostly just scale-models of each other. We had friends with a sesame shiba who looked EXACTLY like a half-scale Kuma. They looked each other over, like "WTF?"
Oh, java, his adorable! How long ago was that?

Didn't seem like it while I was at it.
A student here, who doesn't speak much Hebrew (he's from Germany) was bit by something he's apparently allergic to, because he started to develop a rash all over his body and his foot is swollen. I called a medic and everything, and I'm trying to translate as best I can to all sides, but he's stressed with a deadline of his own and he clearly didn't need that to start his day, poor guy.
a half-scale Kuma
Babushka dogs. Only, you know, without the part of being inside each other.
Poor German dude.
I'm afraid to ask when's the last time Nilly got some sleep.
Only, you know, without the part of being inside each other.
Cause that would be icky!
Lori and I used to joke that shibas are apartment-sized, jindos are house-sized and akitas are ranch-sized.
