Gaudy Night is excellent! and, if you want to follow the sequence, Busman's Honeymoon is lighter (and shorter); it ha a series of letters at the beginning which give you a variety of viewpoints (that's not a spoiler is it?). There's also a short story which comes after that ... can't remember the title.
