Instead, my kid took to violent video games like a Sith to cookies.
So much so we took all his games (and toy guns) away for a year.

Kinda. He no longer points guns at us or others, and is better able to differentiate between what's OK in gamespace and what's OK in meatspace.
Of course, there was a lot of teaching and talking during that time, and still is.
