All joking aside, that's an attitude that's really hard to fight in the Midwest. More so than other places I've lived, anyway. You may take the days you're entitled to (if you must), but there's something morally suspect about it.
Everyone is allowed to take personal days. There are laws.

DAMN that Puritan Work Ethic! It's ruined a couple of perfectly good "sick" days for me with its guilt.
Come join me on the next leg of the cruise line work. 20 hour days, 7 days a week, and I didn't even get meal breaks!

Pretty much. I leave in the morning for another tour of duty.
Also, on the pixie dust front, that's what the park workers call the pink stuff they spread over vomit when someone hurls in Disneyland.
