So, if I put $4000 in an IRA by the 15th, I get like a thousand dollars more back on my taxes. That's like getting an immediate 25% return on that money. What am I missing? What's my downside?

nah, you make legit points. If I'd been in a bar/restaurant, sure. But this was an upscale bar with expensive drinks! OTOH it was in a hotel
