I text from my cell phone a lot. I have a full qwerty keyboard, which makes it easier and it's included in my package, so it doesn't cost anything.
Plus, it's easier when I don't really want to talk to someone.
I do think it's becoming increasingly popular.

I do think it's becoming increasingly popular.All of this is extremely true for me. I love that I can text someone a quick question or note without actually having to speak to them.
Mostly to and from my sister. It's good for communicating when one of the parties is generally disinclined to answer the phone or listen to voicemails.
