Calli: My people have a saying. A man who trusts can never be betrayed, only mistaken.Avon: Life expectancy among your people must be extremely short.

JZ, aside from the gobsmack I want to reinforce that the reasons they gave are totally out of line. Also there is no way they could have said something about it without you noticing it. It sounds to me like they blame you for two things:

1) being unable to read their minds

2) them being unable to read your minds.

In a way it makes sense that if both projective and receptive telepathy are requirements that they be unspoken one...

In bizarro world, that is.

The people who said they are covering for something are 100% right.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

Oh lord -- I just got an email from a friend who was stuck all last weekend dealing with state budget issues in Albany, with reporters outside her office. She points out that this Spitzer thing is just exactly what she didn't need right now.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

Incidentally, I would run screaming from a boss who expected to be able to 'read me'. I come to work for a paycheque, not dimestore psychoanalysis.

ITA. Or if I didn't, I'm sure they'd fire my ass a week or two after they hired me....

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

Also, I often wish I were less readable in the first few months of a new job, since what there is to read most of the time is "oh shit oh shit what am I doing here?" FTR.

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

JZ, I'm so sorry to hear that. It's unbelievable. My beliefery is gobsmackified. It's stuck on "They don't want JZ there anymore? How does that even work?"

I'm just going to point at what billytea said. So not a failure on your part, JZ.

An awesome note from Gawker:

When CNN interviewed former U.S. Attorney Kendall Coffey about the Eliot Spitzer mess this morning, they kinda left out the bit where Coffey resigned in disgrace back in 1996 after he bit a stripper. Quoth Coffey: "This is not survivable."

I've been thinking about it and... I strive for inscrutable at work. When I say something, I mean it, and I'm not too shy about that. But the rest of the time? I'd like to keep my own council. And personal life, personal. I'm really private. Co-workers know about my family, but that's about it. A few know about what my vacations are for. Except for my former laid-off officemate, they don't know my politics or my passions.

I have a really hard time with even annual reviews, with the "10 year plan" because it's my business, damnit! Fuck the corporation! ...even if my bosses have my best interest at heart.

But what if your boss prides himself in his ability to read people, and then his pride gets hurt? Will no one think of the poor boss and his hurt pride?

Hey, what's a decent bottled bbq goop? I've got some cooked pork I want to doctor into sandwiches.
