I have had phases where I didn't bite, and my nails were still crappy, so it might be worthwhile to do for a long time. I did have tips in college for a while, and I remember how double-crappy the nails underneath were when I took them off, so I know this is kind of a long-term investment.

oh, yeah. I took them off for volleyball. It was a good month or two before they looked normal. They basically have to grow out entirely.
My daughter didn't get a mani/pedi until 8th grade graduation. Now that she's 16, it's a special treat, like for getting straight A's. She got kid-friendly nail polish when she was 5-ish for her toes and after about 10 she got to do her own nails and wear Bonnie Bell Lip Smakers. She still doesn't wear makeup but that's because she values sleeping over makeup.
Remember the "We Like the Moon" video? Here's one by the same guy about cake: [link]
Is the ick more in having a party/spending money on it?
Sort of. I loved playing with nail polish and make up etc. But it was an at-home thing. My mom certainly didn't take me to a salon that was designed with kid-me in mind. I guess it's the idea of a service industry popping up around it.
Though, maybe the nail salon is better than Chuck E. Cheese.

In my mind, it's the spending money at a specialty venue for it. A few years ago, a friend of mine told me that her 9 year old neice wanted Auntie Thea and Her Friend Jilli to be the guest stars at her birthday party, so we could do everyone's makeup. That was all sorts of fun, and having wee baby gothlings ask to be made up "all glamorous and spooky!" was the best part.
But special salon chains that are aimed at kidlings? That freaks me out.

right out!
2.5 hour meeting that drained me. Followed by unsucessfully attempting to view lecture which is somehow broken for my computer. Can see it on the other pc, but other pc has no sound. Ahrg.
Tired.
