It is kind of a cowl- like a monk's cowl without a hood. I would call it a capelet, though.

I did wear ponchos in the '60s as an innocent child. I will not be repeating that experience for photographs as an adult.
I figure that if god had meant me to wear ponchos, he would have had me born in the Andes.
