Boxed Set, Vol. V: Just a Hint of Denial and a Dash of Retcon

A topic for the discussion of Doctor Who, Arrow, and The Flash. Beware possible invasions of iZombie, Sleepy Hollow, or pretty much any other "genre" (read: sci fi, superhero, or fantasy) show that captures our fancy. Expect adult content and discussion of the Big Gay Sex.

Marvel superheroes are discussed over at the MCU thread.

Whitefont all unaired in the U.S. ep discussion, identifying it as such, and including the show and ep title in blackfont.

Blackfont is allowed after the show has aired on the east coast.

This is NOT a general TV discussion thread.

All is well that ends in pizza.

For those who might not be on Facebook or Tumblr with me.

I crossed the streams on fandoms:

Could it be possible that Busty Ross is actually a time traveler from the modern era? It would explain so much.

It totally would! I was grumbling last night that she acts more 21st century than the actual normal 21st century characters on the show like Abbie and Jenny, and, indeed, more so than me or most of the actual normal 21st century Americans I encounter in day-to-day life.

Buffistas are rocking the word play even more than usual when discussing Sleepy Hollow. "Busty Ross" "Twistory".

Also has anyone noticed how show's Twistory reverses a certain right wing trope about the USA being founded upon Christianity? In this AU the USA was founded on witchcraft. Most of the big name founding fathers and mothers are revealed to be practitioners of magic in alliance with witches. It was even strongly hinted in the first season that the Religious Freedom clause was put in place specifically as a way to keep a promise that America would be a safe haven for witches.

And yeah, I have to me 3 the idea of Busty Ross as time traveler. Her use of late 20th/early 21st century hints time traveling origin. "Let you in" "Go for it" "Overthink" . She's from the 1995.

Incidentally, I'm pretty sure that even in the real world, the Salem Witch trials were among the many cases in the back of founders minds when that provision was included in the Bill of Rights.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

Oh god, you're probably right. Which means she's going to turn up in the 21st century and we'll have to put up with even more of her?

That is my fear regardless of her century of origin. It's like, "Show, did you learning NOTHING from the debacle that was Katrina in S2?"

"There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."

I feel like we went from one Katrina to two Katrina's. They split her two aspects in half so that we have Betsy Ross in the past and Pandora doing magic in the present. I'm still watching the show, but it is in second place after watching Scandal.

I'm enjoying Pandora so far, since she's legitimately creepy and powerful, and also, like, well-acted.

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

Pandora's monster-of-the-week bit is formulaic, but Shannyn Sossamon is selling the hell out of the role in all her scenes with the principals and guest characters. And Crane is worrying about her as an opponent rather than mooning over her in the midst of a 240+ year love triangle with the Headless Horseman, which is a definite bonus.

Basically I've gone from disliking almost everything about the show (which drove me to stop watching in the middle of last season), to disliking one supporting character whose jarring out-of-placeness may yet turn out to have story reasons.

Susan W. - 2nded. Pandora is cool. Plus, I think we may finally get a villain who genuinely believes on some level she is doing the right thing. Not just in the sense of acting out of personal pain (though Pandora now has a bit of a back story) but believing that she is acting in the long term best interests of the nation/world/whatever. Villains that think they are the good guy, are far scarier than villains who just Bwa-ha-ha and revel in their eviltude, at least if done right. I wonder if they will end making her complex enoigh to have translated her personal experience into a larger viewpoint - Miltornian rebel against a tyrant deity or deities sort of thing. OK, much as I love the show, there is a good chance she will be just another bwa-ha-ha-er with a tragic backstory. But I'd love to see a villain with an actual principled commitment to the wrong side, not just lashing out in oversized anger against personal wrongs.
