'The Message'

Boxed Set, Vol. V: Just a Hint of Denial and a Dash of Retcon

A topic for the discussion of Doctor Who, Arrow, and The Flash. Beware possible invasions of iZombie, Sleepy Hollow, or pretty much any other "genre" (read: sci fi, superhero, or fantasy) show that captures our fancy. Expect adult content and discussion of the Big Gay Sex.

Marvel superheroes are discussed over at the MCU thread.

Whitefont all unaired in the U.S. ep discussion, identifying it as such, and including the show and ep title in blackfont.

Blackfont is allowed after the show has aired on the east coast.

This is NOT a general TV discussion thread.

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

Also, I do enjoy Happy Homemaker Ichabod.

I don't think I like Betsy Ross even in the abstract. I don't necessarily dislike the idea of her per se, but the character seems superfluous to the story I'm interested in. And the actress' delivery of practically every line is distractingly off-putting.

Pandora, I like.

Good Trouble and Righteous Fights

Sleepy Hollow: so, Betsy Ross is awful, right? Or the actress, I mean. She's so jarringly bad and all of her line readings are wooden. Ugh.

Yep, she's awful. I've tried to be open to the idea of her character, at least as long as she stays in the past where she belongs, and I think she COULD'VE worked if better-executed, but no.

I think most of my gripe is that for all that the twistory makes the 18th-century flashbacks purely insane, Tom Mison grounds them by having the same bearing and and mannerisms he'd use if he were in a serious drama set in the era. He makes it possible for me to suspend disbelief just enough to enjoy the ride, but everything about Betsy's voice and body language just screams 21st century. Which I guess is their idea of making her a sexy, sassy badass...but nah. Not working for me at all.

That said, I did enjoy the episode, though I figure all I'll rewatch of it is the opening with the housework through the Daniel vs. Crane dick-measuring contest (there's some hilarious commentary and fanart on that on Tumblr), and then the very end where Crane and Abbie are talking on the porch.

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

Adam Rose, aka Max the creepy roommate in Veronica Mars S3.

Thank you, P-C!

OK, the trailer/ad/whatever for The Expanse I just saw was pretty convincing. Do I want to start reading the books before the [what is it a miniseries?] starts?

Of course, I am just now getting to The Martian and my To Be Read piles are ridiculous, but still, it's a possibility.

Pandora in glasses is caliente.

She totally reminds me of Audrey from Twin Peaks.

All sorrows can be borne if you put them into a story. Tell me a story.

but everything about Betsy's voice and body language just screams 21st century.

Yeah. I want to like the idea of her, but this dynamic undercuts the flashbacks.

I like that Pandora seems to be a bit chameleon-like.

"Cry havoc and let slip the boobs of war!" -- Miracleman

I think, from the perspective of the showrunners, we're supposed to forget Katrina ever happened.

Not a problem. I was in denial when it was happening, so this works for me.

GS: If you had to choose between kicking evil in the head or the behind, which would you choose, and why? Minsc: I'm not sure I understand the question. I have two feet, do I not? You do not take a small plate when the feast of evil welcomes seconds.

Finally caught up on Flash and Arrow.

I'm hoping the producers of Arrow aren't dumb enough to kill off another popular character to try force things to be "like the comics" but I'm afraid they are.

If Flashback!Ollie is back on the island, when does he get a chance to learn Russian and join the Bratva? Or is he going to get off and then stuck on it yet again in time to be rescued for pilot episode. Which would be really silly.

As for Flash, them straight up killing Atom Smasher seemed really out of character. And Barry's dad deciding to immediately leave town after getting out of prison felt more like an actor/budget thing than any remotely logical story beat.

I was wondering the same thing. Plus, I'm ready for more Anatoly.
