Boxed Set, Vol. V: Just a Hint of Denial and a Dash of Retcon

A topic for the discussion of Doctor Who, Arrow, and The Flash. Beware possible invasions of iZombie, Sleepy Hollow, or pretty much any other "genre" (read: sci fi, superhero, or fantasy) show that captures our fancy. Expect adult content and discussion of the Big Gay Sex.

Marvel superheroes are discussed over at the MCU thread.

Whitefont all unaired in the U.S. ep discussion, identifying it as such, and including the show and ep title in blackfont.

Blackfont is allowed after the show has aired on the east coast.

This is NOT a general TV discussion thread.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

If you're seeing anything racial in TVD, you're going too far.

Or, ya know, I was told by someone on a site less civil than this one. Serves me right.

It was interesting to see my argument turned back on me (Everyone dies in this show!), but I still believe it's a very different life expectancy scenario than Supernatural. TVD has a core cluster of people who are still in the story, but Bonnie's often shipped out to another town, or crying herself to sleep because magic reasons.

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

Everybody dies except the large chunk of people who will not under any circumstances die (at least not permanently), Many of whom I would love to get rid of, personally.

It seems so obvious to me that all the black characters except Bonnie (and maybe Bonnie's mother's adopted-ish son, I forget what happened to him, he might have just left Mystic Falls like a sane person) get killed off, and quickly. I don't understand how other people don't see it.

I am still hoping that Bonnie's father who hates magic might survive and be interesting, but that is a weak hope and would only be a small gesture at this point, even if it happens.

The more I learn, the more I realize how little I know.

I'm tempted, but one of the customer reviews bothers me enough that I probably won't buy. Partial quote:

1. The bit rate is about 2/3 of the ADV discs. I expected this to be lower since A&E is squeezing about twice the number of episodes onto a disc - ADV put two episodes while this set piles on four per disc. The only way to do this is to compress the programs more. Quality-wise, the image is still remarkably good, and I didn't hear any differences in the audio quality.

2. Unlike the ADV discs, these are not progressive scan encoded - the video is interlaced. Some players don't handle interlaced video properly when they try to convert it to progressive scan output, and jittering can appear in motion. This drops the image quality on players that are outputting a progressive video.

3. For some reason, A&E didn't bother using the original source material, and instead, used their broadcast edits. At the beginning of each episode, they have the "Dolby Surround Where Available" bug in the lower right corner, which is unacceptable to me. This just makes it look like they recorded it off TV.

If you're not a big stickler for quality, then this set is for you - the price is just amazing, and most people won't care about the lower bitrate or encoding method. Videophiles, however, should probably steer clear and stick with the ADV sets, or wait until a new set is released with higher quality.

Team Free Wolf?

Seriously?

If that catches on, I will randomly maul any TW fans who don't know where it came from.

There's a guy currently talking shit about me on IO9 because I think everyone is racist all teh time...I told him to get my shit right, or to stop talking about me, and I'd do the same.

However, if he lived on the inside of my head he'd have heard me panic that once Michonne joined the group that Temp-Dog had better keep a look out, because he's disposable now.

I am sad that I am bitter enough for that to flit through my head for even a second, but at least [spoilers redacted].

But I contend life is what made me bitter, and at least I can tell when stuff is crazy talk, instead of following black people around to tell them they're imagining things.
