I kept wondering why they didn't IMMEDIATELY put up a scout on top of the RV to watch for zombies.

Also, an 8 point buck is NOT cuddly friendly Bambi. Those things WILL charge if they're afraid or threatened or in rut. And those antlers and hooves will cut you. Why would anyone let a kid approach a wild animal like that?

I was flabbergasted too. This is not a petting zoo, people! Even if the buck had taken fright and turned to run, clipping Carl with a hoof when springing away could have been a lethal affair.

I kind of took that as a sign that it had encountered neither people nor wildlife-hunting zombies before. I think if anything other than human beings were zombifiable, we'd have seen evidence before now.

My thought on the "not a good sign" was more along the lines of rabies or whatever else normal thing/disease that makes a wild animal act out of character. Like the time that fox was sneaking up on me while I was sawing in the snow.
But that's my reaction to comments here. Seeing the deer pause calmly reminds me of the deer here in NJ, who don't give a flying f*** about humans. Both our populations are rubbing elbows so much that their fear has been reduced to almost a 10 foot radius.
I don't know about more rural areas. Maybe it was a Watchung buck.

I agree with all of you. I looked at the buck's rack and I told Beau, I would never let my child near that animal. it is lethal if it decided to charge. Good points all about the hooves as well.
But you know what? This is right in line with the quality of decision-making in the graphic novel. I had to set the graphic novel down after being about 2/3rds of the way in the series (last year) because this group of people seem lacking in basic decision-making skills. The risks they take make me crazy.
