Also Mitchell's wish to give up killing is not just a matter of pleasing his "family". He actually turned to one of his victims back in the 60s and spared her and asked her to help him give up killing.
But he looks at killing like drinking, as a problem for him not for his victims. He feels guilty but never really takes responsibility for his own actions. He asks the woman to take responsibility for stopping him killing. And then later on when he kills 20 people in the Box Car Tunnel murders, he still looks at it like a drunken binge. He says something on the lines of "Oh that was a year ago. I'm not that person any more". And when he tries to help a teenage vampire not kill he tells him (paraphrase cause from memory) "surround yourself with good people. Their disappointment when you do wrong will put you right again." Which of course assume the occasional kill, just the "good people" keeping you from doing it too often. And of course making someone other than yourself responsible for stopping you killing. At one point Mitchell actually sets up a 12 step program for vampires - again implicitly taking for granted that there will be occasional backsliding. Though he is so bloody stupid maybe he really does not think of that.
But he really is battling against his serial killing problem. And does oppose the whole Herrick taking over the world thing. It is just that he can't stop being a serial kill and also can't really stop the whole "being a dick" thing.
Yes there will be another series. But Mitchell is gone. Don't know if there will be a new vampire. But it does look like big bad for the new series will a super vampire.
And I don't know. I liked Nina and Annie, and in spite of being really mad at him on occasion like George. An example of someone with a large asshole streak who is still basically a good and loveable person.
Sorry - guess I have a heck of to say about Being Human having just caught up about, what, a year late.
I don't think I can handle an entire season of George and Annie. Nina grew on me, tremendously, but Mitchell leavened the others. I'm not saying he was admirable, but his character made the others more watchable.
Annie was very annoying. Her story was interesting, but once it was told, the character seemed to lose her purpose on the show. George was too much of a goofball; he often made me want to shake him til his brains rattled back into place. The humor of the show was the sort that just makes me uncomfortable, like, I know I'm supposed to find this funny, but I don't. (Of course, I have that problem with many shows.) I liked Nina best; she was the only one of the group who had any sense, though she had her WTF moments too.
I liked the first season, I think I'll leave it at that.
George has grown more bearable. I suspect they will introduce a new character to replace Mitchell. I enjoyed the combination. I used to watch sitcoms and they mostly had an intentionally nasty character. Louie in Taxi. Ted Baxter in Mary Tyler Moore.
As you say Mitchell leavened the group. But he also came to the end of his arc. He had to either die or become the big bad.
If they introduce a new character to the family I wonder if it will be vampire. One of things in this universe was that vampires really could not reform. There was the vampire who stayed clean for 40 years then one day was overcome by the hunger and killed his human lover who was the love of his life. If he could not stay clean, I wonder if any vampire can stay clean. Maybe there is a spell. There is a surviving additional werewolf. Well intentioned, but young and kind of the strong silent type. Not very good foil for George, Annie and Nina. (Actually Nina does not need leavening. Almost totally awesome, and her major flaw is that she keeps apologizing for yelling at George when she was right. OK well she did get conned by the Krazy Khristian Krackpots. But mostly awesome)
I kind of liked Mitchell, or at least saw why the other characters tolerated him -- remember, they're all dysfunctional. The producers were smart in casting such a charismatic as Mitchell, it supported WHY we're seduced into being Mitchell's co-dependents.
