Boxed Set, Vol. V: Just a Hint of Denial and a Dash of Retcon

A topic for the discussion of Doctor Who, Arrow, and The Flash. Beware possible invasions of iZombie, Sleepy Hollow, or pretty much any other "genre" (read: sci fi, superhero, or fantasy) show that captures our fancy. Expect adult content and discussion of the Big Gay Sex.

Marvel superheroes are discussed over at the MCU thread.

Whitefont all unaired in the U.S. ep discussion, identifying it as such, and including the show and ep title in blackfont.

Blackfont is allowed after the show has aired on the east coast.

This is NOT a general TV discussion thread.

BSG's first two years are very good, though.

SG1 had a LOUSY awful first season. It got better after some producers jumped ship (or were pushed) in the second season and turned into the series that generated such fangirl interest (and also, male fans could enjoy the adventures and the awesomeness of Amanda Tapping).

There are no wrong answers, there, zuisa. The advantage of SG-1 is the sheer volume of episodes, as it did run for ten seasons. While it is not as consistently brilliant as the modern run of Doctor Who, it is pretty darn good, and there are plenty of truly brilliant moments. Doctor Who might be tops for sheer dense genius. I can't really pitch BSG to you, as I didn't care for it, but it does have the reputation of being quality - though somewhat darker than SG-1 and Who.

I've watched a couple episode of all three, and so I think that is part of why I am having such trouble deciding. I've had a friend try to get me into SG-1 forever, but there just SO MUCH of it. Doctor Who seems fantastic in its wonderful wackiness, and then I had an acting teacher sing the praises of BSG for an entire class once, and I really appreciate strong acting.

I am just incredibly indecisive and hate having to choose.

I vote Doctor Who. Unless you are inclined to get shippy, in which case, SG-1 is the way to go. I mean, it is much more satisfying for people who get invested in ships than Who is.

If you like bleak dystopian multi-character narratives, then BSG.

Clever, whimsical, heartbreaking, sometimes ridiculous sci-fi, Doctor Who.

Popcorn action-adventure with very likable leads and everything blowing up, SG-1.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

Killer robots and sexy robots - BSG.

Robot dog - Doctor Who

OK, I think K-9 is in two of the new Who episodes....

Anyway, I vote Who as well....

SG1 had Replicators!

Strangely enough of the three on offer, BSG has the most significant female characters with agency.

(Which is not to say that the others don't have significant female characters with agency -- but Bechdel moments are few and far between on each because the women suffer from Smurfette Syndrome.)

I know almost nothing of Stargate. Between the other two, I'd boil it down to: if you're more left-brained, watch Galactica, and if you're more right-brained, watch Who.

Who or what is Bedchel and what is Smurfette Syndrome? Is that when there is only one female character?
