A topic for the discussion of Doctor Who, Arrow, and The Flash. Beware possible invasions of iZombie, Sleepy Hollow, or pretty much any other "genre" (read: sci fi, superhero, or fantasy) show that captures our fancy. Expect adult content and discussion of the Big Gay Sex.
Marvel superheroes are discussed over at the MCU thread.
Whitefont all unaired in the U.S. ep discussion, identifying it as such, and including the show and ep title in blackfont.
Blackfont is allowed after the show has aired on the east coast.
This is NOT a general TV discussion thread.
Well, I just watched an episode where they tried to convince Number 6 that he was actually Number 12 impersonating Number 6, so "crazy" seems like small potatoes.
io9 gave the new series a terrible review, so I'll wait to see what the verdict is from you guys. I'm enjoying the old series so far. Close to halfway through.
Doctor Who: I liked
the short-lived badassedness of Ten, and I'm glad it was kept short. In the Confidential, RTD pointed out that that's the sort of superiority complex which turns you into The Master, and we really don't need the Doctor going there for anything more than a couple of minutes. As DT said, pride comes before a fall...
.
Super
strong episode, loved Lindsay Duncan and the supporting cast
.
I am a little upset at the BBC, who obviously moved the original air date, thus making
all the references to 21st November just a bit off
.
Doctor Who: I also liked his badassery - mainly because I sort of agreed with it. Well, I guess it was more that I could see both sides. On the one hand maybe screwing with these laws about time is like screwing with nature or the environment (a bad idea)- but on the other hand, maybe time laws are like some sort of preordinated destiny, which as a concept kind of sucks, so, why not fight fate?
Also, the moment where he said, "We're fighting time itself and I'm GOING TO WIN!" was really awesome. Then, unfortunately, he went insane.
Doctor Who stuff follows.
Re: P-C and DCJensen's discussion: I thought the final webpages highlighted the 'fact' that Adelaide died on the base. It seemed to me that the other two had found her, managed a cover-up, and told the world only half the real story. I'm going to have to go back and pause the webpages... But, yes, telling the story of the Doctor - interesting. Wonder if there'll be fallout from that in the future-future.
Things I absolutely adored: "State your name, rank and intention." "The Doctor. Doctor. Fun." (Heh.) The Doctor meeting someone who is obviously one of his major heroes, and his brilliant responses to that. The refit of Gadget-Gadget to flaming speed-bike, Doctor and Adelaide on the back of it. The total wonderful weirdness of the water monsters. The 'oh dear God don't let the water touch you' tension (I may never take a shower in a non-hermetically-sealed room again). The Utopia/drums/Master theme playing as the Doctor did the Ultimate Time Lord bit (if I correctly spotted that).
Things I wonder: "He will knock four times." Whose prophecy is this? The Ood's? I can't remember. They've really stretched out the death thing (they've been predicting it for, what, at least two seasons?) - but it's clear the Doctor thinks he's headed for a final death, not a regeneration. Which is going to be interesting when (SPOILER, FOR ANYONE WHO'S BEEN TRAPPED IN A FROZEN LAKE ON MARS FOR THE PAST YEAR) he's proved wrong. (I almost wish they'd not made the Matt Smith thing so public. It would have been fun to wonder whether the Doctor had a future or not. Especially with 2+ years worth of references to his 'journey coming to an end' and so forth.) Wish we could have Doctor go evil and be killed by a former companion. Not going to happen, but what fun.
Things I can't wait for (SPOILERS - all taken from the preview for the Christmas special): Donna! Wilf! THE MASTER! I may have to plan Christmas around this one.
Seska, to answer your question:
the "knock four times" thing was said to the Doctor by the clarivoyant woman on the Magic Double-Decker Bus in the last special, whatever its name was, the one with Michelle Ryan
.
Dr. Who:
Seska, the final shot of Adelaide's web page pulls in on the words "died on Mars," and we see it change to "Earth" instead.
Liked this one lots for all reasons stated above. Cannot wait for the Christmas special!
There's also an animated Doctor Who episode coming out.
Dreamland is the second animated Doctor Who serial based on the British science fiction television live action series. It will star David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor and air in six parts (one 12 minute episode, followed by five 6 minute episodes) broadcast daily from 21 November 2009. It is due to be broadcast in its entirety on BBC Two and BBC HD on 5 December 2009.
Plus? Children in Need special on Friday.
Waters of Mars was entertaining, but isn’t sitting well with me. I think the central problem is that
the only person telling us that the Doctor can't change things is... the Doctor. So first there's the tragic Time Lord's burden stuff, which is a bit distasteful. And then when "can't" somehow turns into "shouldn't," there's hubris and trauma and suicide and doom to make it clear that this is A Bad Thing. Otherwise we wouldn’t know the difference. If the crux of your story would pass unnoticed by the audience unless you have neon signs pointing at it, that seems like a design flaw.
As for The Prisoner 2.0, I just ran across this quote from the writer:
“The original says we must assert our individuality: ‘I am a free man,’ ”he said. “But one thing that interests me is that perhaps we have become too individualistic.”
FAIL.
