Watched the original miniseries and loved it. I remember Diana eating the rat. Awesome! And Robert Englund was adorable. Willy? Can't remember whether that was his name, but I'm going with it.

So...the terrorism thing isn't even a metaphor? Not even a thinly disguised one?
Actually, I think that's okay. Because in 2009, anything that even remotely hinted at being a terrorism metaphor would have been called out (rightly so) as a ham-handed, hackneyed attempt at relevance.
Better to just come out with it.

I only caught parts of it. I was switching over from SYTYCD. I'll have to rewatch online to get a real sense of it. What I did see reminded me of the original plot.
