Good Trouble and Righteous Fights

DH and I just decided we're giving up meat for Lent. We're going to follow the tradition that allows you to break your Lenten fast on Sundays, so it's not going to be a month and a half with no meat at all. And since it was originally DH's idea and he's coming to it from a Catholic background, fish is allowed. But I don't like fish very much, so for me that's part of the sacrifice, and I'll only be eating it once or twice a week when he cooks it for dinner.

It's a big change from my usual Lenten sacrifices, which tend to be things like "no swearing," which lasts until the first time someone cuts me off in traffic, or "no buying books," which given the size of my to-be-read pile and my library hold list isn't a hardship unless a favorite author happens to have a new release in that range. But I'm looking forward to it as a challenge and a way of forcing myself to cook and eat more mindfully.

Thing is, I'm discovering my cookbook collection isn't exactly vegetarian-friendly...

ETA saw the video this morning--definitely a wow.

So come, my friends, be not afraid/We are so lightly here/It is in love that we are made; In love we disappear

Susan, the library is the best place to find cookbooks, and IIRC, they have some good veggie ones. It's pretty easy to do -- I periodically give up meat, and was a vegetarian for a time in my teens.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

It's Obama's "Yes, we can" speech intercut and set to music with people singing his words. People like Scarlett Johanson & Kareem Abdul Jabaar and lots of other famous faces.

But it's just (a) very inspiring (b) very contemporary and now and hopeful. Particularly after the Bush years. It's like seeing that pinprick of light when you've been trapped in a mine.

I'll try the library, Plei. I do have the Moosewood Cookbook, though glancing through it, it seems like there are way too many recipes that take more than an hour to work with my lifestyle--my cooking runs to Mark Bittman and the less fussy end of Rachael Ray, because it's *fast*.

There's always grilled cheese or pasta with a quick homemade veggie sauce. Those are already staples, though I tend to throw a little pancetta or prosciutto in the sauce when I have it on hand. But I don't want to live on just two recipes for six weeks.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Despite the catchy video I'm still voting for Hillary.

Obama has done nothing yet. Not at this level.

I don't want somebody going into the White House making new and exciting mistakes because they don't have a grip on the vagaries of foreign policy or freakin' health care plans.

I don't need inspiration. I need competence.

I wonder how much of a factor it is that women will look at Hillary's candidacy and think: "If she doesn't get elected it might be another 20 years before a woman is in the White House." Whereas if Obama loses this primary, he'd be poised to run again. (After he's - you know - actually done something in the Senate.)

Greece's financial crisis threatens to take down all of Western civilization - a civilization they themselves founded. A rather tragic irony - which is something they also invented. - Jon Stewart

What has Hillary done?

Is she entirely too polarizing to build ANY sort of coalitions?
